Our Island Home
Before Vibe was a brand, it was a feeling. That feeling lives on a nine-mile island in the Caribbean.
A nine-mile island with a very big soul
St. John is the smallest of the three main U.S. Virgin Islands, tucked between St. Thomas and the British Virgin Islands. No stoplight. No chain restaurant. No airport. You take a ferry, and you feel the pace change before you ever step off the boat. Referred to locally as "Love City", St. John is American soil with Caribbean soul.
More than two-thirds of the island is protected national park, donated by Laurance Rockefeller in 1956, and the surrounding waters are safeguarded by the Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument, covering over 12,000 acres of protected reef. The hills are wild, the coral is thriving, and the beaches look the way Caribbean beaches looked before anyone thought to build a resort on them.
This little island is our home, our inspiration, and where every piece of Vibe Jewelry is dreamed up.

Petroglyphs at Reef Bay, Virgin Islands National Park
"No historians with certainty know what that symbol stands for. For St. John locals and visitors alike, the petroglyphs are something close to the 7 Wonders of the World in the Caribbean."
The Reef Bay Trail, A St. John love affair
The Taíno & Our Logo
Art that endures for a thousand years
Along a trail that cuts through thick forest to the sea, ancient carvings reflect up from a spring-fed pool. They're petroglyphs carved into the blue basalt rock above: symbols, figures, and geometric forms made by the Taíno, indigenous people who lived on this island long before it had a European name. The Taíno, and later the Kalinago, built a world here that lasted centuries.
What they left behind at this pool has outlasted nearly every trace of the civilizations that followed. Some carvings appear to represent ancestors or spirits; some believe that mirror between stone and water represents a connection to the afterlife.
One carving in particular, known as the St. John petroglyph, has never been found anywhere else in the Caribbean or South America. You'll see it honored all over St. John by people who feel connected to this place. Unique to this island, it became our logo and embedded in every piece of our jewelry. It's our way of honoring the deep history of the place we call home.
Layers of History
Every trail has a story
St. John holds centuries of history in its landscape, from ancient indigenous settlements to Danish colonial plantations to a modern community shaped by resilience.
The Taíno & Kalinago (pre-1493)
The island's first people, the Taíno and later the Kalinago, fished these reefs, farmed these hillsides, and built a world here long before any European ship arrived. Their legacy lives in the petroglyphs at Reef Bay, in the Cinnamon Bay dig sites still yielding new discoveries, and in the island's DNA.
Danish Colonial Era (1718–1917)
Over 100 sugar plantations were carved into the hillsides. Still-standing ruins, such as the Annaberg windmill, are a testament to both the ingenuity of sugar production and the brutality of the slave trade that made it possible. In 1733, enslaved Akwamu rebels seized the island for six months.
Emancipation & Cultural Foundations (1848–1950s)
Emancipation came to the Danish West Indies in 1848, driven in part by a mass uprising in Frederiksted, St. Croix. In the years that followed, formerly enslaved people built new lives as farmers, fishermen, and community leaders, carrying their traditions and deep connection to the land forward through generations and shaping the island’s culture from the ground up.
Modern St. John (1956–Today)
With the establishment of the Virgin Islands National Park in 1956, much of the island’s natural beauty was preserved for generations to come. Today, St. John is a vibrant blend of history, culture, and community where local traditions, art, and island life continue to evolve.
The wildlife we share it with
St. John is home to an incredible range of creatures, and some of them might catch you off guard. Like the wild donkeys roaming the roadsides, grazing on hillsides, and occasionally making a cameo at the beach. Brought here by Danish colonists centuries ago to work the plantations, they've been free-roaming ever since.
In the water, green and hawksbill sea turtles munch away at the seagrass beds. On the trails, red-footed tortoises cross your path, and hermit crabs scuttle through the brush. At dusk, six species of native bats, the island's only native land mammals, take flight over the canopy.
The mongoose, brought from Asia in the 1800s to control rats, is quick on its feet and not shy about going after your beach snack. Iguanas, whose name comes from the Taíno language, lounge in the trees eating hibiscus flowers. And 50+ species of birds, from bananaquits to ospreys, call the island home year-round.

The plants we share it with
St. John is covered in native plants that shape everything from the hillsides to the shoreline. Sea grape trees line the beaches, their broad leaves offering shade and their fruit a favorite for birds. Cactus and agave cling to the drier slopes, and towering kapok and genip trees rise high above the forest canopy. Along the water, mangroves create quiet nurseries for marine life, their roots weaving into the shoreline.
Color shows up everywhere. Bright hibiscus and bougainvillea spill over hillsides and garden walls, while the scent of frangipani fills the air.
Some plants carry stories with them. The bay rum tree became the island’s namesake fragrance, distilled for centuries into cologne. The manchineel, known as one of the most dangerous trees in the world for its poisonous sap and fruit, grows along the shoreline.

Two best friends, one island, a feeling worth sharing
Jen and Osa came to the Virgin Islands separately in 1992 and met selling jewelry at an open-air market on St. Thomas. Both felt drawn to the pace, the people, and the light of St. John. The kind of place where strangers become family and sunsets make you forget what you were ever stressed about. On Black Friday 2004, Vibe Jewelry was born here, inspired by the land, the sea, and the culture all around them.

This island gave us everything
What makes St. John special isn't just the landscape, it's the people. It's a small island with a big heart, a close community where people look out for each other, celebrate together, and show up when it counts.
That spirit was on full display when Hurricanes Irma and Maria hit back-to-back in 2017. The island was devastated, but the community rebuilt together and came back stronger.
Vibe proudly supports many local and mission-driven organizations, from protecting the national park and its reefs, to sponsoring students' education, to empowering women and at-risk youth across the USVI.

Island-Made
The island shapes the jewelry
Every collection draws from something real on St. John: the sea, fishermen's hooks, the wildlife, the ancient carvings, the unique textures.
The Hook Bracelet
Born from a Caribbean fishing tradition centuries old. Fishermen's wives wore hooks facing their hearts for their husbands' safe return. The "J" hook is our signature style representing St. John.
The Petroglyph Collection
The ancient Taíno carving is embedded in every piece, rings, earrings, cuffs. A thousand-year-old symbol you carry with you, connecting you to the island's deepest roots.
Sea Life Collection
Turtles, starfish, sea-fans, the creatures that share these waters, in sterling silver and 14K solid gold, so you carry the reef with you wherever you go.
Textures of the Island
From smooth, reflective finishes to rugged, weathered surfaces, our textures are inspired by the natural world around us. Ocean movement, natural erosion, and details drawn from the sea all influence the styles we bring to life.
Carry the island with you
Every piece of Vibe Jewelry is designed on St. John, handcrafted with the petroglyph embedded, and made to bring a little bit of island warmth wherever life takes you.
